Hi folks, this week is set to be a scorcher and there is even a possibility of extreme/catastrophic conditions forecast for Wednesday. Fingers crossed this doesn’t eventuate but with that in mind it seems like a good time to refresh your minds with information about our school Bushfire planning

(Please note that we fall into the group of sites under the R1/R2 rating)

The department’s emergency information hotline is available on catastrophic fire danger days 1800 000 279

If called as Catastrophic with advanced notice (ie: the afternoon prior)…

Following the approval of the Minister for Education and Child Development (or their delegate), DECD schools and preschools with a risk rating of R1 and R2 and situated in the affected Fire Ban District will be CLOSED on days of where a forecast ‘catastrophic’ fire danger rating has been supplied in advance.
All school bus and taxi services scheduled to travel through the affected Fire Ban District will be CANCELLED when the fire danger rating has been supplied in advance, provided a R1 or R2 school exists in the relevant Fire Ban District.
All school closure directions will be coordinated by DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management in conjunction with the relevant Education Director.
No school or preschool is to close or suspend operation without the prior approval of the Minister for Education and Child Development or their authorised delegate.
This means we cannot have anyone on site including staff – the entire site is shut. All staff members will stay home for the day including the Principal.
We will advise all families the afternoon before via text message service.

If level increases to Catastrophic throughout the school day…

DECD schools and preschools with a risk rating of R1 and R2 and situated in the affected Fire Ban District will operate ‘as normal’ on days where a fire danger rating has been elevated to ‘catastrophic’ that day.
All school bus and taxi services scheduled to travel through the affected Fire Ban District will operate ‘as normal’ when the fire danger rating is elevated to ‘catastrophic’ that day.
The DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management team will advise schools and preschools if a school closure is subsequently deemed appropriate.
All school closure directions will be coordinated by DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management in conjunction with the relevant Education Director.
We will stay open but communicate with families about collecting children early if they wish to do so.
Staff and students will remain at school and monitor the local area.

Fire event impacting upon site…

DECD sites and services must enact the respective elements of their Site Emergency Management Plan (or Bushfire Response Plan if applicable) in the event of a fire impacting upon their site or student transport facilities.
DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management will provide direction and assistance on being made aware of a fire in close proximity to a DECD site or transport route.
Sites must not wait for direction prior to enacting emergency procedures.
We have detailed plans that include moving to the safe refuge (gym) and other off site locations if required
We will communicate with families about collecting children early if safe to do so – please note the safest option may be to leave your child at school. We do not want families to travel through danger to reach their children. We will stay with your child/ren until the event has passed
Please note that our policy says we can only release children into the care of parents and the nominated emergency contacts – it is important that we have the correct information for your child/ren.

Seek advice

Following a decision to enact Site Emergency Management Plans or Bushfire Response Plans owing to a fire, schools or preschools must inform DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management via 1800 000 279 or contact their Education Director at the earliest opportunity.
Advice relating to CFS activity and the viability of transport arrangements will be provided.

Communicate

Following the provision of approved communications content by DECD Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management, sites and services impacted by a bushfire related emergency shall release information to parents and caregivers in accordance with their usual communication strategy.
